More Than Candle Making: What Sip & Scented Candle Workshops Has Taught Me

When I first started Sip & Scented, I thought I was creating candle-making workshops. Pick your fragrances, pour some wax, have a drink, make something cute, and go home with a candle you love. But somewhere along the way, I realized we were creating something much bigger than that.

Sip & Scented has taught me that people are craving opportunities to connect. To put their phones down, try something new, laugh with the person sitting next to them, and just enjoy being present for a little while.

I've watched strangers start conversations over fragrance oils. I've seen coworkers loosen up and actually get to know each other outside of work. I've hosted birthdays, date nights, bachelorettes, corporate groups, best friends, mothers and daughters, and people who simply decided to come alone and do something for themselves.

And I love watching it happen.

The little details really do matter.

One of my favorite parts of Sip & Scented is creating the atmosphere around the workshop. The flowers, music, drinks, food, table setup, scent choices, little gifts...sometimes I wonder if anyone even notices all of it. But you do. I've learned that those details are what turn "we made candles" into "we had such a good time."

Not everything has to be productive.

This might be one of the biggest lessons. We're all constantly doing something. Working. Parenting. Planning. Answering emails. Running errands. Thinking about the next thing before we've even finished the current thing. Sometimes you need two hours where the only decision you have to make is whether you like lavender or sandalwood better. That's enough.

Community doesn't always happen the way you expect.

Building community has been one of my biggest goals with The Sweetest Thing. But I've learned that community isn't necessarily about packing a room with 50 people.

Sometimes it's six people sitting around a table.

Sometimes it's two friends catching up.

Sometimes it's a group of coworkers laughing way louder than anyone expected.

Sometimes it's one person who came alone and leaves having talked to everyone.

Those moments have changed the way I think about what a "successful" event looks like.

And finally, I'm still learning.

Every Sip & Scented workshop teaches me something. Some events sell out. Some don't. Some ideas work beautifully, and some make me go, okay...we're never doing THAT again. 😂

That's business. But each workshop reminds me why I keep creating these experiences in the first place.

Yes, you'll leave with something that smells amazing. But my hope is that you also leave a little lighter, a little more connected, and really glad you gave yourself permission to come.

And maybe that's what Sip & Scented has been about all along. ✨
